It’s International Day against Homophobia, and I think in our ‘oh so’ very progressive world we need to shed light on homophobia more than ever. I once had a professor on my very first day of class walk in, wrote his name on the board, and then went on to make a list of the things that made him who he was. He wrote I AM a professor, a pastor, a father, and a son, gay. I could see the eyes of everyone and hear the muttering. I thought what a bold move, an inspiring move because sometimes we only pay attention to one sole thing that makes an individual. It always the gay/transgender and the sexual orientations that becomes the focus and we forget the human part, that they are mothers, fathers, sisters, just ordinary folks. Human Beings!
So this blog hop is a good thing, with or without prizes and it’s more than just prize pushing. It’s the opportunity to give someone who has never read an M/M book or a transgender book the opportunity to see what it’s all about. It’s a fun way to send a message, and hopefully clear up the single stories some folks have of what it means to be LGBTQ. This one’s for every phobia that has to do with ones sexual orientation.

People are so much more than just one thing. If only everyone remembered that.
ReplyDeleteGreat post!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this with us today
ReplyDeleteGreat post, D! That professor sounds like a great teacher in more than one way. :)
ReplyDeleteYou're right that was a bold move by the Professor and it would be great if everyone could be that open without worrying about hate.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cool professor. I bet that simple gesture helped other people realize that they can be as open about who they really are.

We are all 100% human. It really is that simple if people would only pay attention. Thank you for the post!

We are all a sum of many parts. That's as it should be. To paraphrase the Meredith Brooks song:
ReplyDeleteI'm a bitch, I'm a lover
I'm a child, I'm a mother
I'm a sinner, I'm a saint
I do not feel ashamed
I'm your hell, I'm your dream
I'm nothing in between
I know I wouldn't want it any other way!
Please don't limit me, or anyone else, to being only one of the many facets that comprise my whole!
Thanks for your post. :)
Great post, short and very much to the point.
ReplyDeleteApparently I am rubbish at working the technical thingie on the post but just wanted to say that that is one brave professor you had for your class. Thanks for sharing and for joining in the hop.
ReplyDeleteYaoi!!
ReplyDeleteWow, I think that if a teacher would have walked into my classroom and wrote that on the blackboard, I would have experienced deep respect for him/her on the spot - even before I got so involved in GLBTQ matters. Just for being able to write that and be proud of who he is.
Lol at Erica... Don't get too excited.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, great post. It takes quite a person to just step out and say it without even waiting for anyone to ask.

I am so happy to see so many great authors on this hop!
ReplyDeleteI saw a video of a guy talking about being introduced as someone's "gay" friend. He said I'm so much more than JUST gay and it is so very true. Being straight isn't the focus of a hetero's life so why do so many focus on just that one aspect?
ReplyDeleteNot sure if I entered in the box thingy right.
