Guest Post: A Little Humour and or Snark in Writing by BL Morticia
Greetings fans! Today I’m talkin’ about writing with humor and snark. Now, even in something as serious as romance and erotica writing, there’s nothing wrong with makin’ your characters a little funny. It might be a one liner, a full riddle, or joke, or even the way you portray them in the story.
Well, me, the snarky gal in the Triad of muses, does it better than the other two. Between the three of us, I’m usually the one with that snarky, smart ass mofo that annoys some and endears others. It really depends on the storyline and how they speak to me. Want examples? Okay I’ll give you two.
In my first novella, My Lieutenant, my interracial mm romance, my character Nathan Ellerby fits that bill. Smart ass, funny, isn’t opposed to using the dirty words in all his conversations even the ones with himself. Nathan is the female version of me with some of the things he says. What makes it better? He’s a gay man that harbors serious issues about control in his relationships. He pairs up with a man who is used to it and the whole story revolves around him giving up the reins. Does he do it for love? You hafta read to find out. *winks*
In the follow up, My Lieutenant 2, the story shift to Bryant who isn’t as snarky as Nathan but offers a few comments on his own. Bryant is more like Michael mandrake with his dry sense of humor being the focal point of his persona. In this book, Bryant shows you what a touch hombre he is and that’s what makes this one humorous. Nathan will offer a couple more silly things a well which makes this another romantic comedy.
So, that’s my thing. Erotica with Snark. In all my stories you’ll find some humor with a lot of smexy sex and swear words? What else? Characters from the military or musicians. *winks* I gotta thing for both so look for me to have more romances with humor in 2013 and beyond!
My Lieutenant One Blurb : Nathan Ellerby's apartment has been ransacked by his ex who didn't like the fact Nathan dumped him. Trouncing through the debris uttering a string of obscenities, Nathan's shocked to see Lieutenant Bryant Duncan at his door claiming he's already caught the offender. Sensing an instant connection, when Nathan finds out Bryant's divorced and he's straddling the fence between being gay or bisexual, Nathan finds himself in a quandary.
Although the Lieutenant does everything in his power to prove to Nathan he's worthy, Nathan is afraid to lower his defenses which leaves both men wondering if Nathan will allow love into his life even through his doubts.
