Excerpt
Sebastian fiddled with the seal on Anthony’s desk. “I just ask that maybe you were not quite so free with your compliments. No wonder some women think you are dissatisfied at home.”
“Court is a game, and it is played very differently as a man. You have not seen that side of it—perhaps it is time you did.”
For a moment he thought Anthony was jesting, but Anthony’s thoughtful look told Sebastian he was serious. He did not enjoy court. He only went because Anthony had said it was necessary for Lady Crofton to attend. But Sebastian Hewel wasn’t nobility. His father had been a naval captain.
“I am not the sort of man who is seen at court,” he said, hoping to prevent the seed from growing in Anthony’s mind.
“You do have some strange notions, Sebastian. You are the brother of Lady Crofton, and she is the wife of one of Queen Elizabeth’s favorite courtiers. Of course you’re the kind of man who should be seen at court. It is only because of an oversight on my part that I had not thought to take you before.”
