Review: Memories by Valentina Heart

Memories by Valentina Heart
Silver Publishing
Short Story: 80pgs
3.5 Pants Off

Blurb:
Marlin is a transsexual who has undergone the hormone replacement therapy for becoming a woman, but her sex reassignment surgery has never taken place. Coming home one night, she is greeted by the sight of her man, Gabe, spread out on the bed just for her.

There was good and there was bad, some of it happy and some of it sad, but as they take a journey through their memories, they light up the old flames. Sex, tears, laughter and a wicked dose of romance show what loving is all about for Marlin and Gabe.

Review:
I was hoping for a little something more, but overall I really did enjoy it. I would have liked it more if it did not read like one gigantic sex scene. The importance of the story was just overshadowed by the amount of sex, but that could just be me. I guess it can be described as liberation for our main character. Being so comfortable, finally, with her body and sharing it with the man she loves.

Marlin has arrived home to find her man splayed across like a sexy present for her to open. It’s their anniversary and they are about to heat up the sheets, but in between all the hot and sexy loving they share their past. Marlin is a transgender (male to female) and she talks about how it was growing up being trapped in a body that just did not feel or look right. The destruction it had on her family, the cruelty she received from her mother, and the understanding and acceptance she could never find. Then there was Gabe, and being with him brought her to life and gave her hope.

I did enjoy reading this one and learning about the characters, and as I wrote before, the sex part really took away from the story. There were tender moments in there, and the author did a good job in capturing emotions of the characters. Though the sex was just a bit too plentiful, I won’t pretend like it wasn’t hot as hell (I won’t pretend).

It would be a good read if you are looking for a transgender story.

Guest Post & Giveaway with Tam Ames

Long or short – what’s your preference?

Oh. My. God. Get your mind out of the gutter. Oh wait, we’re at a review site that promotes pantslessness, so, carry on.

But I MEANT hair. In my newest release Summer School,

Lucas has long hair, which while he acknowledges is a pain in the ass to maintain and blow dry, he also knows it turns most guys, especially Jeremy’s, crank - so he deals with the inconvenience in order to please the boys (who in turn please him *eyebrow waggle*).

I always say I could never date a guy who has nicer hair than I do, but I do love guys with long hair that is well taken care of. Not just pulled back in a ponytail all the time or looking ratty. And please, once you start to go bald, do us all a favour and keep it short. When we were in New York City last fall, they were filming an episode of Nurse Betty in a park near our apartment. Walking by one evening there was a young man wearing torn tights (I presume an actor) with gorgeous thick wavy chestnut hair. Let sigh. Kind of like this guy.

http://fashionpix.org/data/media/28/Willy2.jpg (model Willy Cartier)

When I write a story, if the guys are in my head, I tend to keep an eye out for pictures that I think might fit my character. I’ve never seen anyone with perfect Lucas hair (Willy as a natural blond would be closest), but I did find these guys and they are pretty close.

Add about another 6 inches to the hair, and Lucas would never smoke.

Definitely Lucas’s body type, but no tattoos and add another 6 inches to the hair.

Pretty close except no uni-brow. O_o

Pretty close but Lucas is definitely not as fem and pretty as Andrej

So tell me, how do you like your men? I should also be clear; I like guys with short hair and medium hair as well. Lover of diversity, thy name is Tam.

~To win copy of Summer School, just answer Tam's question. How do you like your men. All contest rules apply, runs until August 2nd 11:59pm EST~

Summer School
English teacher Jeremy Decker's split with his boyfriend has left him with no plans for the summer and credit card debt. One solution is to teach summer history classes. College history major Lucas Van Sloan is brought in to assist Jeremy, thrilled to have a summer job that doesn't include supervising kids at the hometown swimming pool.

A summer heat wave has Jeremy more snarly than even upbeat Lucas can handle. Lucas drags the teacher back to his place and out of the heat, determined to drag Jeremy into his bed while he's got him there. However, Jeremy's ex isn't quite ready to let go, and a college student may be no competition for a high-powered attorney.

Tam Ames Bio:
Tam is a single mom, and she and her teenage daughter live in Ontario, Canada. Encouragement from her friend, not to mention the friendly dares, inspired her to start writing m/m romance. I don’t know why I was so disappointed in this short. I guess I had a high expectation in the reading of it, because the author always delivers quality work.

An M/M spin on the classic fairytale Cinderella, where Cinder is the maid slave boy for his aunt and cousins after the death of his parents. When he meets the prince on a day out fishing, they instantly strike up a friendship and Cinder starts to fall in love. Downside, the prince has to find himself a wife by his birthday or lose his title and inheritance.

With the help of an old witch, Cinder is transformed into a woman, and sets out to see his prince for the last time. The set up is very close to the original fairytale, where Cinder loses a shoe and the prince has to find the owner of the shoe. The owner comes with a few surprises but with Cinder still in the mix.

I liked the story and I found it cute, but I guess I was expecting too much. I think it followed too closely to Cinderella. I would have liked if Cinder had went in there as a dashing male and charmed the pants right off of Xavier. I don’t like that he had to become a woman.

I wanted more humiliation for his aunt and cousins. I am a revenge kind of girl and they didn’t get what they deserved.

I did enjoy the build up friendship between Cinder and Xavier; there was an equality there that I really enjoyed.

So Ms Sexton this shout-out is for you. I liked this little offering but didn’t love it.

But can his newfound love help ease the horror that may be waiting? What if the ultimate horror isn’t when Lily was taken but it’s when Lily returns and he realizes his nightmare has only just begun...

Review:
Pryor is a lost man, after losing his daughter Lily. Even worse, he saw when his daughter was taken and dragged into the woods by a wolf. The town and his neighbours believe it was a coyote, but Pryor knows it was a wolf. He becomes a shell of a man, because he has lost the most important person in his life, and to make it matters worst he believes Lily is still out there. Still his Lily, his beautiful daughter but also something more; something frightening.

His guilt and his grief are mixed in with his feelings when he meets Ned. A jewellery designer who makes him want to feel again. Their relationship provides something good for Pryor, and makes him a character you feel sad for. Otherwise, he might have been the mad man stuck in the past and finding an unhealthy way to deal with the loss of his daughter.

The writing is rich and intense, and you can clearly picture the forest and the eeriness of the nights. The anticipation of Lily’s arrival is both creepy and fascinating; I was on the edge of my seat waiting for when she would show up, and if she would show up. When she does return, you can’t help but wonder what her life was like for the year she has been gone, because even though she looks like Lily, something more fearsome lurks behind her eyes and teeth.

Overall, and intensely captivating story about a man facing life without his precious daughter. The story is a short one, but it’s like reading a well-written novel. It’s like a nice flow of water, beautiful and provides its own lyrical flow. While reading you never forget that Pryor is a father, and being Lily’s father is the most important thing in his world. Because whether in life or in death he will always be ‘Lily’s father’ I believe that alone makes this story strong and captivating. A very well written short.

A Symphony of Echoes by Cecilia Ryan

A Symphony of Echoes by Cecilia Ryan

Novel: 163pages
Rating: 4 out of 5

Blurb:
History professor Eric Spears has grown disillusioned with the academic life he's always been a part of. But when a young man called Arthur starts attending his lectures, he finds his enthusiasm renewed by this unregistered student. For the first time in a long while, Eric longs for a real lover and companion, instead of the casual affairs he's used to. He gets his wish under surprising circumstances, but their blossoming relationship is not without its problems.

Complications arise when Percy, another student of Eric's, begins to take too much of an interest in both of them. Will Eric and Arthur's relationship survive Percy's machinations? Or will Eric lose him due to his own insecurity?

Review:
I am surprised out of mind, about how awesome I found this book. Once I started this book, I just could not stop reading until it was all finished. The story captivates with its gentleness and sweetness, but not too sweet. A perfect balance was created, and it just flowed so well. As much as I enjoyed this story, I feel like something was missing and more than half way through, the plot felt rushed and safe.

Eric is History professor, and he has love/hate relationship with teaching. I guess it could be blames on his students, who sit in class like boring cardboard boxes, and hardly show enthusiasm for the course. Until there was Arthur, though he isn’t officially enrolled in the university, his enthusiasm for learning is exciting to Eric, on both an intellectual level, and an excitement in his pants (I know about those).

You can tell by looking at Arthur that he doesn’t have much in the way of possessions, but he is smart boy and Eric wants to help without pushing the boy away. He gets his opportunity to invite Arthur home, when he finds him asleep in his office, though Arthur is sceptical he just got an invitation to a warm place, he’s not stupid in turning that down.

What develops is a beautiful relationship between both men. Though Eric is literally twice Arthur’s age, it pales in comparison to the things they have in common and how well they get along. You would think the story would become all about sex, but sex takes a backseat to the developing relationship, that is one of friendship and a growing love.

A little conflict is thrown in by `Percy` a student of Eric’s who seems to have it out for him. This is the part that threw me; I would have rather him be crazy in love with Eric, than what his actual vendetta was. It all felt too rushed, and as if I am missing something, I guess I just wanted more, because I really like Eric and Arthur (they are just super sweet). They make my heart feel super happy!

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I would love to see more of Eric and Arthur again. Their relationship is budding and beautiful one and I want more. I also really enjoy the author's writing style, it snarky and funny and I like it.
