Favorite book 2012 from a debut author is.....: To Touch the Stars by Jeremy Pack

But as a contemporary novel I'd have to say : The Rare Event by PD Singer (I hadn't thought all this economy and hedge fond stuff could be interesting but she managed to make it quite the read.)
