Guest Post: Roan McKichan is an Action Hero Nerd by Andrea Speed

My character, Roan McKichan, is an action hero nerd.

Now there could be an argument that a nerd, by nature, can’t be an action hero. But Roan is a special case, being that he is a virus child, born infected with the werecat virus, and he’s had some unusual side effects that probably propel him beyond the usual nerd. He’s probably also better looking by a damn sight. But he wasn’t always this way.

Roan’s back story is a pretty tragic one. His father is unknown, and his mother died not too long after he was born. If she had family, they never came forward, leaving Roan a ward of the state. He grew up passed between foster homes and hospitals, and since he was a virus child (never expected to live long or well), his existence was quite isolated, lonely, and troubled. Roan therefore loves books. He’s said they saved his life, and they may very well have. They were his constant companions when he had little else, and since he was immediately ostracized wherever he went, they offered a refuge from the pain of the real world. This is a common enough story for most social misfits, and Roan’s love of books continued into adulthood. Although not yet specified in the books, Roan was a total science fiction nerd, and for most of his adolescence, The Hitch-Hiker’s Guide To The Galaxy was his Bible.

An incident in an abusive foster home ultimately flipped the switched for Roan. While he was still a nerd, and still relentlessly bullied and ostracized, he decided to embrace it, and began fighting back. (If I wanted to piss Roan off, I’d say he started expressing his inner lion, but I’d never do that.) Punk rock helped him a lot in this regard by the teen years, because it encouraged letting your freak flag fly, and he had the freakiest one of all. Of course, it’s hard to see how this rebellious nature led him to become a cop, however briefly, but it makes sense if you realize he was told he could never be one. Telling Roan there’s something he can’t do is a pretty good way of getting him to do it, which his boyfriends figured out almost right away.

Roan may have become a fighter, but he’s still a nerd. Not only does he still love books, but he still really enjoys nerdy things. He watches a lot of Cartoon Network, and both Aqua Teen Hunger Force and The Venture Brothers have been name-checked (he has the latter series among his DVD collection). He also enjoys Doctor Who, loves Monty Python, and has an animation cel of Lionel Hutz from The Simpsons in his office. He’s admitted to Dylan that he used to have a bit of a crush on Commander/Captain Sisko from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. He can drop obscure references at the drop of a hat, and I’ve hidden a Mystery Science Theater 3000 joke reference in Infected: Undertow (coming out this summer), that few people will probably get. (Certainly the man Roan tells it to has no idea what he’s on about.) I’ll give a hint to those who might be curious: Skydivers. That’s all you get.

The cops he works with in a consultation capacity have taken to calling him, somewhat sarcastically, Batman, and while he hates it, Roan has also noted how wrong a nickname that is, mainly because he’s not a rich guy with a lot of tech. Thanks to the movies, that’s not nearly as nerdy a reference as it could be, but you just know Roan was a comic reader at some point in his life. (Which I can verify. He was an X-Men fan, and has the whole run of Transmetropolitan in his library.)

Circumstances he has no control over have made him something like a superhero, which you’d think would be a nerd’s dream. But there’s always a downside you don’t consider, and Roan would be happy to tell you all about it … if he acknowledged being a superhero at all. But he will happily call himself a nerd, as that’s a badge he’d wear with pride.

The Lisa Simpson Memorial Standing: Everybody knows Lisa is the top nerd. But it's not fair to others, so let's just say she's the nerd in metirtum just to free up some space for lesser nerds? 'Cause I'm going to do that anyways.

Speaking of which ….

Here’s Roan’s top five TV nerds:

5. Felicity Smoak, Arrow (TV) – We all watch Arrow for the quality manmeat (come for Amell’s bare torso, stay for Manu Bennett … I mean seriously, holy shit…), but Felicity is one classy nerd. The tech geek that all superheroes need, she can hack anything, and look good in a pair of nerdy glasses, as well as make a dry quip or two. She doesn’t get distracted by being surrounded by handsome men in the batcave (arrowcave?) either, which puts her way ahead of me.

4. Seymour Birkoff, La Femme Nikita (original series) – The new one isn’t bad, but he has more social skills and natural aggression than the awkward, socially inept tech expert for Division. He was smart, but if anyone didn’t belong in a group of secret assassins, it was him. Also, unlike most of the nerds on this list (except for #2), he’s not really handsome. Which is a nice bit of verisimilitude. (Hey, most of us aren’t conventionally handsome. It’s just the luck of the draw.)

3. Abed Nadir, Community – Perhaps a more stereotypical nerd, but done in a way that’s endearing. Also, it’s kind of nice to see a nerd of color, as they’re not all white guys, damn it. He hasn’t displayed much in the way of computer skills, although you assume he has them. He’s a pop culture focused nerd, which I have a fondness for, no matter how socially maladjusted they can be. His close friendship with ex-jock Troy is also very sweet.

2. Arthur, The Tick (cartoon, but you can also count the live action sitcom if you want) – Here’s a pudgy accountant who buys a kind of working moth suit at a garage sale and decides to be a superhero. Except, he really doesn’t have any powers, except the limited, clumsy flight the suit gives him. So no talent, but a lot of enthusiasm, which makes him the Ed Wood of superheroes. Did I also mention that physically, he’s kind of a coward? This is why it’s a good thing The Tick, a nigh invulnerable superhero type (possibly alien, also possibly crazy) literally falls into his life. While Arthur’s inner hero does peek out at times, he remains his nerdy, somewhat timid self at all times, a sidekick barely worthy of the name, and there’s something quite beautiful about that.

1. Willow Rosenberg, Buffy The Vampire Slayer – How do you not love this girl? Even when she went evil, you wanted to give her a big old hug. There’s just something endearing and sweet about her, and she has so many weird hyphens – as in nerd-lesbian-Jewish-witch – how can I not love that? I mean, I know a gay-hooker-vigilante and a straight-dominatrix-investigative assistant, so I’m down with the hyphenated people. Possibly because I am one. Anyways, if you could only have one nerd in a lifeboat with you, she’s totally the one  you would want.

Guest Post & Giveaway with Andrea Speed

You know all those games you can play with your iPod and MP3 players? You know, the “soundtrack of your life” and all that? I've decided to play that game with my characters, although I've limited it to three songs, supposedly designating past, present and future. And then they comment on the songs. Feel free to Google the songs and listen along, although I warn you – Roan's is not for the faint of ears. Especially those last two.

Roan's (of the Infected series, Dreamspinner Press)

Past: Pansy Division – The Best Revenge
Present: Mr. Bungle – Goodbye Sober Day
Future : These Arms Are Snakes – Subtle Body

Roan – Look, I know you're supposed to listen to mellower music as you get older, but I'm just not that kind of person. I still like noise. It speaks to me in a way little else does. And if Holden says that makes me the one old sad guy at the concert, tell him fuck him too.

Holden's (of the Infected series, Dreamspinner Press)

Past : My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult – Sex On Wheels
Present : Fall Out Boy – Don't You Know Who I Think I Am?
Future : The Good Natured - Wolves

Holden – I bet Roan's was all noise, wasn't it? I don't think he actually likes listening to it, I think he just says he likes it to be contrary and difficult, his usual modus operandi. What's the over/ under on him secretly listening to Fleet Foxes? Oh, and tell Roan he can't afford me.

Dylan's (of the Infected series, Dreamspinner Press)

Past: Elliott Smith – Last Call
Present: Sun Kil Moon – Dramamine
Future: Blitzen Trapper – Sci-Fi Kid

Dylan – I guess I've always liked the mellower stuff, although I did go through a Goth phase, and I still enjoy Sisters of Mercy, which is probably as noisy as I get. But for a while, Roan and I shared iTunes, until I accidentally downloaded one of his Skinny Puppy songs to my iPod. I'm sure they're very nice people, but the music was so angry and sinister, I couldn't imagine what kind of mood you'd have to be in to listen to that. (Interviewer suggests a Roan mood.) That's why we have separate iTunes accounts now.

Josh's  (of Josh of the Damned, Riptide)

Past : Beck – Loser
Present : Metric – Combat Baby
Future : El-P – Up All Night

Josh - I tried very hard to listen to only cool bands in high school, but I never knew what those were. By the time I figured it out, they weren't cool anymore, or to like them made you a follower. So eventually I gave up. I was never gonna be the cool kid anyways. I was somewhere between band geek and AV club, so the best I could hope for was to get ignored. Which I generally managed to pull off. I guess I'm still that way, although really I'm too tired to keep up. I think you need a day shift job for that sort of thing.

Colin's (of Josh of the Damned, Riptide)

Past: The Clash – London Calling
Present: Siouxsie & The Banshees – Cities In Dust
Future: Sex Pistols – Pretty Vacant

Colin - I really like old punk, but I like to excuse this with the fact that I'm three hundred years old. Us old fogies cling to our music. I don't get young poeple with their auto-tunes and whipped cream bras and YouTubes ... (Interviewer points out Colin was well into his two hundreds when punk came along.)  Yeah, well, it was pretty much the last time I gave a damn about music. I don't spend all that much time on Earth. You know, where I'm from, the band I like most is Unquiet Dead. (Interview admits having never heard of them.) Oh, they're an all vampire band. I don't expect our music gets to your world. Which is a pity, 'cause they're awesome. Although they do talk about killing humans a lot ...

Guest Post & Giveaway with Andrea Speed

I have Andrea Speed today on the blog as a part of her Josh of the Damned virtual blog tour. I recently just read Josh of the Damn series, and reviewed the latest offering Triple Feature. Please give a warm welcome to Andrea!

This blog tour is an attempt to be different, and an attempt to go back to my serial roots. Each blog post will have a segment in a running story, pages from Josh's diary, about his first encounter with the tragic figure of Dan Fosse. Why is he tragic? Read on, and you will find out.

I hope you enjoy it, and I hope you check out the Josh of the Damned Triple Feature.

Part 3

The werepanda was sitting in the back corner, where the freezer case and the end of medicine aisle met. Since we had no bamboo – and no carrion – I decided to throw it another stick of beef jerky, 'cause that was close enough to a dead animal, right? It sniffed it, then managed to pick it up in his big paws and started gnawing it. The weird thing? Well, weirdest thing …. it was kinda adorable. I mean, a roly poly panda eating a Slim Jim! How is that not cute? I took a little film of it on my phone, or as much as the dimensional distortion would let me. A zombie came in and looked at me funny, but otherwise it ignored the panda, and the panda ignored it. I guess zombies and pandas weren't natural enemies.

The panda was still working on the beef jerky when Colin turned up, and I showed him the new store mascot. “Are there werepandas?” I asked, showing him the shredded remains of Dan's clothes in the back room.

He frowned in a sexy vampire way, and sniffed the air. “I've never heard of such a thing. But yes, it smells like he is.”

“How the hell did that happen?”

Colin just shrugged. “Got me. I don't know why werewolves exist either.”

Still, this just seemed weird to me Okay, weirder than most.. “You think he was bit by a panda?”

“Well, they are bears. Not the most active or vicious of the breed, but still.” After thinking about it a moment, he said, “I wonder if there's werepolarbears.”

Good question. How weird would that be? Actually, now that Colin put the idea in my head, I can't stop thinking about it. Are there werearmadillos? Weresquirrels? Werekoalas? Which would be the weirdest and yet most adorable thing you could be? Oh, and useless. There's no getting around the useless.

Luckily, Dan turned back into a human before Jorge came in for his morning shift. I guess the best thing you can say about being a werepanda are the effects don't last too long. Colin hung around, and helped me explain to Dan his new circumstances, and why he's been living over in the hell dimension. He didn't believe us at first, but then I showed him his shredded clothes and the video I shot of him in panda form, and he seemed to accept it. He also said something that sounded a lot like, “Oh Ling-Ling, how could you?” But when I asked what he said, he denied saying anything at all.

Since then, Dan has been coming by with some regularity, although I've yet to see him in his panda form again, as he usually gets out of here before he shifts. Which is a shame, 'cause my video of him as a panda eating beef jerky has a million hits on YouTube.

Come to think of it, maybe I shouldn't tell him about that. He might want a cut of the merchandising.

The End (Or is it ..?)

Andrea has brought a giveaway, so be sure to leave a comment on this post to win one of her backlist books *they are quite excellent*. Also be sure to check out the other blog stops for a greater chance to win.

Josh of the Damned Triple Feature by Andrea Speed

Josh of the Damned Triple Feature (JotD #3) by Andrea Speed
Riptide Publishing
Short Novella: 66pgs
Rating: 4/5

Blurb:
What most people call a hellish shift, Josh Caplan calls a normal evening. After all, he works nights at a convenience store beside the mouth of hell, selling snacks to zombies and lizard men.

Some monsters are odder—and more dangerous—than most. Like the rampaging, oversized mustache who skips the Pringles and eats the customers instead. Or Cthulhu’s half-brother Stan, who doesn't know how to take no for an answer . . . or where to put all those tentacles.

But killer facial hair and inept hentai beasts pale in comparison to the monster even other monsters fear. When hell’s big boss demands a sit-down with Josh, she reveals a destiny bigger than he’d ever imagined—or wanted. You'd think preventing the apocalypse would net Josh more than minimum wage and a hot vampire boyfriend, but it turns out saving the world can be a pretty thankless job.

Review:
I really enjoyed reading the third book in the Josh of the Damned series. I had to scamper off to read the first two stories, which wasn’t a hard feat because both stories were delightful and short. The series is about Josh an employee at the Quik-Mart doing the night shift, and has run ins with all sorts of paranormal creatures since a hell vortex opened near the store. Josh handles all the craziness with wit, and calm attitude that I’m sure no one in his position would be able to do (I know I couldn’t).

Josh of the Damn Triple Feature has three stories that offer a lot more of Josh’s world, and an exciting development in the plot. The combination of ordinary meeting extraordinary creates this wonderful balance, and will leave the reader with a smile on their face.

TF is broken down into three stories; the first two are just so absurd that it’s freaking brilliant. Night of the Mustache, we have this giant 70’s looking mountain of hair that’s out on a rampage. Throw in some bikers and Josh’s sexy
vampire boyfriend Colin and you have a recipe for success. The development and world building starts with the Stache, and Josh learns that he might not be so ordinary after all.

I Was Cthulhu’s Love Slave has Josh working during the holidays. This story had answers to some of Josh’s questions and he finds out how the vortex came to be. Also, Josh might have some monster pheromones because they all seem to want to get a piece of him, judging by the crazy squid monster trying to put his tentacles everywhere. Once again sexy vampire boyfriend to the rescue, and Josh’s own personal love slave (Peek-a-Boo).

The final story is the icing on the cake, Interview with the Empire. It’s the most detailed story of the bunch and we get a deeper look into the world of the creatures. Josh learns some shocking truths, he gets drunk, and he might lose his job at the Quik-Mart. Enjoyed the development in the relationship when it comes to the hot vampire boyfriend. I feel like we know more about Colin, instead of him just being the pretty monster.

Overall, enjoyed reading this book. It’s a great fun filled read, good for just kicking back. I anticipate the creatures that author dishes out, the common and the uncommon. She totally owned this, and I look forward to more Josh and his monsters.
