ARC: Weight of a Gun

Weight of a Gun by Various Authors
Storm Moon Press
Short Novella: 96pages
4.25 out of 5

Blurb:
Everyone knows that guns are dangerous; they have long been a subject surrounded by controversy. Combine them with sex and you have a subject that is virtually taboo, but smoking hot. This anthology explores the intersection of these two worlds, and the sensual possibilities they inspire.

In Bounty Hunter, William Hunt is hot on the trail of lover-turned-outlaw James Campbell. But when William finally catches up with James, bringing him to justice is the last thing on his mind. Changing the Guard introduces Tomi Vuorela, working security in a frozen off-world outpost. When Andile Harper intrudes on his seclusion, Tomi must determine if the interloper is a harmless workman or a dangerous terrorist.

Avery Belfour is The Machinist, kidnapped by a rival colony in need of his services. But the dark and deadly Harrow may have other plans for Avery first. In My Rifle Is Human, the more a Gunslinger like Fil sexually satisfies his shapeshifting partners, the Ordinances, the more likely they'll survive as weapons on the battlefield. When late-bloomer Morris becomes Fil's latest partner, however, it will take all Fil's patience and skill to seduce and inspire Morris in time for the next wave of attacks.

Tyler Maxwell from In the Pines, a former New York cop now working a desk job in Alaska, buys a gun as a present and begins to dream about the mysterious and beautiful Flynn. But Flynn is more than a dream, and Tyler must find the truth before he loses his mind. Finally, in Compromised Judgment, Rózsa Ignác is working to uncover a gunrunning operation supplying arms to his enemies. He's certain that Cistalan Konrád is involved, but his attraction to the other man puts himself and the entire investigation in danger.

Review:
I am going to write this again so forgive me if it's all broken record. Anthologies are never my top pick when it comes to reading; I get frustrated because some stories suck and others I wish were just a tad bit longer. This anthology falls under I wish the stories were longer, well at least most of them. This anthology is all about the gun, this deadly and yet sometimes-beautiful weapon. This book will show you that sometimes it is not all about the killing, the gun can be used for something dangerously sexy and good.

The Bounty Hunter by Cornelia Grey
Talk about 'color me surprised' I think I missed the part about this being a gun fetish anthology.  Not to worry this story reminded the crap out me. It offers up an old western vibe, all dusty trails and cowboys. William Hunt is a bounty hunter and after his once lover turned outlaw. When the two finally have their confrontation, its all kinds of explosive and where the gun gets all kinds of dirty. I enjoyed this short because of the whole lovers being reunited under some dangerous circumstances. Where f*cking is last thing they should be doing, but it definitely is the best thing.

Changing the Guard by Peter Hansen
This one is my absolute favourite. Set in a futuristic world where humans reside on other planets. We meet Tomi Vuorela a security guard working isolated on some frozen planet placed there because he gave his superior some lip. When an unexpected visitor makes an appearance Tomi has no idea what to think of Andile who says he is there to run maintenance. Tomi is suspicious and treats him like a criminal, but that doesn’t stop the attraction between the two men. From the start, the writing is funny and sarcastic. Andile and Tomi just grab your attention and the ending to this is a delightful surprise. The gunplay is indescribably hot, erotic, and I just loved it. Peter Hansen is an author to watch out for.

The Machinist by Gryvon
Avery is the machinist, kidnapped and kept in a dungeon by a rival colony. Just when he is coming to terms with how is life will be, he is taken captive again by the deadly looking Harrow. Avery being the funny ‘lets make the best out of this crappy situation’ kinda person he tries to drag Harrow into conversation but by the deadly look in the man’s eye Avery knows that his life will no longer be his own. Though he should be afraid, Avery can’t help that the gun being held at his back is making him all kinds of hard. This short was sexy, and pain filled, another one that would be served best if it were longer.

My Rifle is Human by Sumi
This is where the surprise comes, just when you are starting to get a little bored with all that gunplay this refreshing little tale makes an appearance. Though the gun still plays a part, it’s quite imaginative with a scientific spin. Fil was a born a Gunslinger which makes him the bedding partner to the Ordinances (human weapons). As a Gunslinger he has to have sex with the Ordinance that is given to him, sex is the energy that drives them and makes them unstoppable on the battlefield. Fil has had no success with his Ordinance; no matter how much he has sex with them they never come back alive. Until he is given Morris who wants to get to know him, but all Fil knows is sex and Morris needs sex to survive. I loved how humans were able to become weaponry, can you just imagine that. This story was super cool and my second fave.

In the Pines by Lydia Nyx
Even days after finishing this story, I still kept thinking about it. Former cop Tyler moves to Alaska working a desk job after being injured in the line of duty. He purchases a gun to be given as a present but then starts to have these sexy dreams about a man named Flynn. Never knowing the man he dreams about every night is connected to the gun he bought. When he finally makes the connection, it’s just a little too late for Tyler because he’s already in too deep. I loved the bit of mystery offered up in this story, and the beautiful yet sad ending. I believe this story can be looked at in many ways and it’s entirely up to the reader.

Compromised Judgement by Penny K Moss
Rozsa is an undercover agent about the blow the lid off some gun smuggling. That’s until there was Konrad, a man Rozsa is deeply attracted to but is very much a part of the case. There’s one thing Rozsa knows is that you don’t get feelings for those involve din a case. It seems that the men share a small history, though they have never met previously, and the feelings they share for each other could be fatal. The gun is a part of both men, one makes it and the other wields it; but together they make a very loud bang. My least favourite but still an interesting story.

Overall, another winner by Storm Moon Press. This is by far the craziest and most awesmazing anthology. I never saw the gun as anything but an object that kills, now I view it as something erotic and yet dangerous. The two ingredients to killer awesome book! This has something for every reader. A little contemporary, some science-fiction, and Paranormal. With the other world goodness, and the explosive sex Weight of a Gun is not to be missed. In addition, the cover alone deserves some serious love, a perfect match to the book. So I say ‘who cares how much the gun weighs, is what they do with it that counts’. A guaranteed pants losing!

BDSM Week Book #5: The Janitor

The Janitor (The Contenders #1) by Jan Irving
Loose-Id
Novel: 171pages
4 out of 5

Blurb:
I’m a naturally optimistic type of person, you know? Yeah, I think good things will happen, only they usually don’t. Take Noel: even though he’s educated and rich and he don’t think he’s even gay, I want to belong to him. I want him to take me completely---Dane Connelly

Dane Connelly is a gay janitor and boxer with a soft heart and a simple outlook--he wants to meet the right man, someone who will look past his macho sport and put him in the place of a submissive. He wants to fall in love and belong to his partner.

On the surface, Noel Atherton, an intellectual, shy, and sexually repressed university graduate student with a crippled leg, could not be the dominant lover that Dane longs for. But after their first meeting, when Dane disables the fire alarm in the library and lights a cigarette, Noel is drawn from his shell. Soon, Noel needs to touch Dane, exploring his sexuality for the first time. And both learn that looks can be deceiving.

However, Noel's controlling father is appalled by the relationship and quietly arranges to get Dane out of the way and punish him for daring to love a man so far above his station.

Review:
I enjoyed this book so much that I find myself going every few days to bask in the pure love of the main men.

Dane is a boxer, scarred and considered not very smart because of the way he looks and talks. His appearance says strong and tough but never was there a man more gentle and fragile. He is a just a poor man searching for someone to love and to have someone love him in return. Working as a janitor at a local university he meets the man he is destined to love, but Noel is way out of his league. A rich and smart man he could never grow to love a boxer as scarred and unintelligent as he is.

Noel has no idea whether he is gay or straight, having no sexual experience since an accident left him disabled with a busted leg. Any form of sexual excitement leaves his leg hurting and his ego small. He can't help but being drawn to the beautiful Dane his innocence and his pure heart, but how can one so beautiful be attracted to a cripple?

This story is just so sweet and I love the role reversal, makes for an interesting love scene. There's something sexy when a strong and masculine character becomes submissive to his less masculine partner. This story is about innocence and prejudices that people tend to have for someone who doesn't quite fit the mold. Dane and Noel will have a lot to overcome but the way they love each other is just so sweet. This will show you that not always do you need to be book smart or rich, to come out on top.

This book has a light BDSM theme, a little spanking, dirty talk, and the unexpected daddy play (not creepy at all). I think the uniqueness lies with the switch in power with this couple, very sexy it all was. One of my all time favourite reads!

BDSM Week Book #4: Bound and Determined

Bound and Determined by Jane Davitt & Alexa Snow
Loose-Id
Novel: 230pages
3.5 out of 5

Blurb:
When Sterling Baker discovers the wonderful world of BDSM, he's ready to literally throw himself at the feet of the spectacular Owen Sawyer, but Owen is unwilling to take on someone so new to the scene—or so he says. Determined to get what he wants, Sterling sets out to convince the doubting Owen that he can be the best sub in the world, the fastest learning, the most obedient.

It's not as easy as he thinks it will be, and things get even more complicated when Sterling realizes that he's fallen in love with Owen. With the stakes that much higher, Sterling's more determined than ever to win Owen over. But now he'll have to convince Owen they can have more than a teacher/student relationship, more than just good kink.

Review:
We meet Sterling, who has developed an interest in BDSM. So his friend Alex who is apart of the scene takes him to a club, so he can get a feel of what it’s all about. His intention is to find someone to teach him the ways, and his teacher will come in the most unlikely person. When a scene between a Dom and a submissive starts playing out in the club, Sterling recognizes the need to be on his knees, the need to submit. He recognizes the Dom, his professor from his Freshman year Owen Sawyer, and just by looking Sterling knows he’s found his teacher.

Getting Owen on board is the difficult part, because he doesn’t want to take on a new submissive and Sterling is 20 to his 35 also Sterling was once his student and attends the same university he teaches at. Talk about a ruination of his career if anyone was to find out. Sterling is one not to be ignored; he wants Owen and is determined to have him. With a little coaxing (stalking) Sterling finally gets Owen to take him on as a submissive, and the things that lie ahead will be difficult for both men.

Owen is a seasoned Dom, so he knows what he is doing. He has no patience for an unruly and resistant sub, so he can’t understand why he took on the boy. There is something about Sterling, making Owen feel things he hasn’t felt in a long time and he’s willing to risk it all for a little time with him. All the fun he will have teaching Sterling some discipline, and making him his submissive.

The book unfolds with Owen and Sterling both learning from each other. It’s a slow progression into the world of BDSM, there is no diving into anything hardcore, Owen takes his time with Sterling and gradually introduces him to pleasure to be had in pain. There are a few shaky situations along the way. Sterling’s relationship with his father plays a role (an asshole father), and his insecurities in being what Owen wants.  Sometimes Sterling tries to get Owen to do things his way, and that often causes a bit strain in the developing relationship. Though Sterling has the desire to submit, he’s afraid to truly bend to Owen’s will.

I really enjoyed reading this book, though a bit wordy at some points and many unnecessary tidbits about mundane things. The book is an honest look into the world of BDSM, the slow development between Owen and Sterling is the highlight of the book. With that said, I became very disappointed with Sterling at the end of the book, and I felt he was forgiven far too easily for what he did. I felt like the whole lesson of the book was lost in that situation; everything Owen had taught him was thrown out the window. Whether he was hurting or not, I realized that he never learnt a darn thing and once again proven his immaturity. It could have been a higher rated book, just felt like the ending was unnecessary. I know we have to make mistakes to learn from them, I just think Sterling’s mistake was too much.  I found it far too predictable and unnecessary.

SideNote-
This book would be a great introduction to readers new to reading BDSM, its takes baby steps and doesn’t throw anything hardcore all at once.

SideNote 2- Really liked Owen he was a perfect Dom, able to recognize his mistakes and fix them. Sterling lost me at ‘I am an idiot, so I go and do stupid things’.
